The responsibility of politicians

On 12th October 2023, Joseph Borrell, the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy leader, arrived in China. The Union’s top diplomat stated in Beijing: “The world is failing terribly.”

A strange statement concerning a person who claims to be one of the most responsible factors worldwide. How can the world be failing and he be content with folded arms only to state this unhappy fact?! It is true though- with well-played concern?! … What has he done and possibly currently doing to prevent this from happening?…

The truth is that it is not “the world that is failing”, but he has failed personally, as well as the whole team of world political factors. It is them who are to blame for the current situation in which tensions have progressively escalated into open interstate and internal state military conflicts in different parts of the world – from Europe to the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Haven’t they noticed the decades-old contradictions between Jews and Palestinians? Did they not know about the aggravation (not without their active participation) of the relations between Russia and Ukraine?

So what?… “The world is failing terribly.” Like Pontius Pilate, Mr. J. Borrell and the like on both sides of the Atlantic “wash their hands,” and with sorrow, which, note, costs them nothing. Nothing at all!

No, gentlemen! Well, this time you should not acquire after “washing your hands (guiltily or rather hypocritically).” All guilty who have experienced themselves as big players ought to bear their responsibility for the military-political crises that have unfolded in the world, to bear responsibility for the humanitarian catastrophes they have caused – by their actions or inactions- in both cases criminal in nature. At the same time this has been done completely consciously, serving one’s own or others’ interests. Responsibility not before the court of conscience, but before an effective international tribunal.

Apparently, Señor J. Borrell does not want to be held accountable for his actions. Worse, however, he seems to hover in the clouds as it happened during his visit to Beijing (12-14.10 2023) when he stated: “After the war in Ukraine Europe has become a geopolitical power.” And he put forward the immodest demand: “… to talk to China from that position.”

The Chinese, however, are not naïve to perceive the US satellite (which actually the EU is) as a geopolitical factor. According to Reuters, China is more interested in the huge trade deficit of $426 billion that the EU accumulated in 2022 with them, the world’s second-largest economy. It is for this reason that the high-ranking European visit was awarded “high” attention only by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of China Wang Yi, and only on the second day of the arrival of J. Borrell (i.e. on October 13). Apparently, from nowhere, out of obligation, because the Chinese foreign minister is still co-chairman of the joint European-Chinese commission on economic relations. By the way, this visit was planned for July, but the Chinese categorically postponed it until the autumn and the Europeans obediently agreed.

Perhaps we should not judge Señor J. Borrell so harshly. After all what precisely depends on him? We just have to look on him as a simple blank cartridge that fires, throws sparkles but do not kill? I.e. a harmless person?

Is that true? Señor J. Borrell has a rich political career, both in his own country – Spain, and at the political peaks in Brussels. A member of the Spanish Parliament (Cortes Generales), he was consecutively Minister of Transport and Foreign Affairs of his country. In Brussels he appeared as a MEP, subsequently President of the European Parliament, since 2019 – Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the European Union to the von der Leyen Commission.
As can be seen from the cursory reference to his political career, he is not a common person at all. He is at the basis of many long-term foreign policy processes as a direct, moreover – a leading participant and cannot just “wash his hands” with the indifferent statement that: “The world is failing terribly.”

He is definitely to blame for this “terrible failure”, as he defines it. He ought to take over not only the moral, political, but above all the criminal responsibility for the “terrible failure”.

It is high time for politicians to start taking criminal responsibility for their political failures, which have led to victims of suffering and destruction.
