About the Gulag

/General Directorate of Camps in the USSR /

In the Gulag the main idea was to re-educate those members of society who had fallen under the pernicious charm of petty-bourgeois prejudices – namely the pursuit of a well-off existence, a full-value life in conditions of organic scarcity that accompanied the construction of the new socialist society.

Re-education was carried out through hard work, entirely, but not voluntarily dedicated to the good and prosperity of society. Gulag alumni created material goods that they themselves could not take advantage of. As a rule, these modern slaves were placed in the conditions of wretched existence.

The therapy was quite painful, and the pedagogical tools and approaches used for that re-education were quite rigid in nature, but it was hoped that those who survived would be willing to endure the hardships and limitations associated with building new social conditions, and would become their conscious and devoted builders.
