About France and Great Britain in the 1930s of 20th century

In July 1938, France closed its border with republican Spain and thus doomed it to defeat. Why did one of the largest politico-industrial and military forces on the mainland help the rebel General Francisco Franco, supported by Hitler and Mussolini? And Britain declared a policy of neutrality, but that neutrality was pro-fascist in nature.

The main question is why Britain and France followed a policy of “appeasement”. They tried all possible means to avoid the war. For this reason, they made a number of concessions, mainly to Hitler, reluctantly swallowing: the Saar’s annexation to Germany, the remilitarization of Reyland (the Rhineland), the Anschluss of Austria and the open betrayal of Czechoslovakia in Munich in September 1938.
